CTC presents first art exhibit of spring semester

Posted on by centraltexascollege

The Central Texas College (CTC) Fine Arts department will open the first art exhibit of the spring semester this Friday, January 24. “Above The Surface,” a collaboration of paintings by David and Susan Harmon, will be on display in the upstairs art gallery of the campus library. As husband and wife for 32 years, David and Susan share studio space but do not work on each other’s paintings other than a verbal collaboration.

“Above The Surface” comes from the Harmons’ emotional and intellectual states of being. The outcome is a visual expression of a person/portrait, place/landscape or thing/still life object. The exhibit has been called a visual collection of emotion. The unleashed splattering of gestural paint strokes on huge canvases, which is so often a part of the artist’ agony released in abstract expressionism, are replaced by a textural layering of paint leading to expressive mark making in meaningful contexts. Overlays of paint are built up and cancel out previous marks and textures from artistic expression.

David is the Art Department chairperson at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX and adjunct professor at the CTC Fort Hood campus. A graduate of Penn State University, he is well-traveled and well-rounded in his areas of artistry and has taught for more than 30 years. David’s work has been featured in exhibitions around the world and includes many different styles such as hard-edged abstraction, figurative realism and expressionism.

Susan is a fine arts adjunct distance learning professor for CTC. She received a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from Georgia Southern University. She also teaches online art classes through Allied American University in Laguna Beach, CA and Colorado State University.

A meet-the-artist reception will be held Thursday, February 6 from 5-6 p.m. in the CTC library art gallery. The Harmons will discuss their work and answer audience questions. The reception and the exhibit are both free and open to the public.
